The poem ‘Transfigured Night’ by Richard Dehmel is a poetic rendering of a dialogue, in which a woman tells her lover she is expecting a baby with another man. During the fin-de‐siècle period in Vienna, themes such as these, alluding to Freud’s eros‐thanatos theory, were particularly fashionable. Het Collectief will be playing Schoenberg’s ‘symphonic poem’, originally written for string sextet, in a colourful version for piano trio by his pupil Eduard Steuermann.
Paul Wittgenstein (1887‑1961), brother of the famous philosopher, was a talented pianist until the day he lost his right arm during World War I. But his misfortune turned into good fortune: as a one-armed pianist he drew immense crowds. Famous composers including Ravel, Scriabin and Prokofiev wrote original works for the left hand just for him. Also Erich Korngold, an Austrian whose music caused a furore in Hollywood, wrote a magnificent suite for this eccentric figure.
