Boulez & Messiaen

The ‘Quartet for the End of Time’ (1941) is an apocalyptic vision in which the composer Olivier Messiaen, ‐ at the time of writing a war prisoner in Germany – transcends his day‐to‐day catholic faith by inventing ingenious composition techniques in order to achieve a musical translation of the notion of eternity. This ‘Quatuor pour la fin du temps’ is an absolute key work in the ensemble’s repertoire.

In addition to Messiaen's 'Quatuor', we present 'Le merle noir' and work by Pierre Boulez. From the latter we play the 'Dialogue de l'ombre double': a revolutionary work in which a solo clarinet enters into a conversation with its own electronic shadow…

Thomas Dieltjens, piano
Wibert Aerts, violin
Martijn Vink, cello
Julien Hervé, clarinet
Toon Fret, flute
