Het Collectief also contributes to the festivities for the centenary of Pierre Boulez. This "pope" of contemporary musical life in Paris and far beyond practiced a strict serial style as a young composer, in line with Schoenberg and Webern.
With the 'Douze notations', a series of character pieces for piano that he later transformed into one of his most performed orchestral works, Boulez set the tone for a whole generation of young composers immediately after WWII. Later he would deviate more from that strictness, which is reflected in an ensemble piece such as 'Dérive 1', where serially conceived building blocks still form the basis, but follow a more organic, expressive logic. As a counterpart to this work, we present a masterpiece of French spectralism from the same period: 'Talea' by Gérard Grisey.
In 1977, Boulez founded IRCAM, which provided a strong boost for electronic music. From Boulez's own electro-acoustic oeuvre from the eighties and nineties, Het Collectief presents two extremely challenging solo works: 'Dialogue de l'ombre double' for clarinet and tape, and 'Anthèmes 2' for violin and live electronics.
